Canoeing safety

Category: Canoeing & Kayaking, Water sports safety rules

SAFETY RULES
  • Going on a cruise, be sure to wear a lifejacket.
  • In overturning canoes immediately catch the boat and paddle, that they would not have drifted downstream.
  • Do not turn canoe back in the water. Swim across the path of the stream to the nearest shore, keeping the boat in a narrow portion near the stern or the nose and not letting go of the oar.
  • In overturning canoes in the sea far from shore to stay near the boat, and serve a distress signal.
  • In the case of the coup kayak - canoeing with a closed top - try not to touch the cover, which protects the bank from the spray. If it does happen and you can not get out of the boat, pull the strap or loop case.
  • Selected from a boat, as it were tumbling forward, if necessary, pushing his hands from her body behind.
OVERCOMING THE THRESHOLD The basic rule - an initial study on the route on the map and mark on it all the thresholds. The harbingers of Threshold:
  • Sound of boiling water which spread over long distances;
  • Visible from afar white line of foam and mist formed by the spray;
  • The river narrows, the depth decreases and the flow velocity increases.
Your actions:
  • not reaching the thresholds, floating toward the bank;
  • go before the land along the river and try to find a safe passage between the thresholds;
  • If there is no passage, to evade the rapids on the land.
YOU DECIDED HELD threshold water or land in them accidentally.
  • Row in either direction, if only the speed of your canoe differed from the speed of the river's flow. This will help you maintain control.
  • Send canoe in calm water at great depth.
  • At the turn canoe backwards, do not try to turn it back: you set aside, and you crash into rocks.
  • Continue to pass the rapids, moving the stern forward, and edit them by boat, watching the movement through the shoulder.
  • Try to take turns on the outer radius, where more depth and faster flow. But do not come very close to the shore, so as not to crash into him or in waterlogged trunks of fallen trees.
  • If the canoe spun on the spot or stuck with his face sideways in stone, do not let him apply bank toward the stream, otherwise the water will flood the bank. Instead, move your weight toward the stone, bending with each other and the boat.
  • Clinging to the stone, expand the canoe so that you can move on, while in no case does not let go paddle.
Dam They represent the greatest risk to canoeists. Water poured over the edge of the dam and rushes down, and striking the bottom, creates a rapid whirlpool. Spouts thrown from side to side all that goes in them, and set back to the dam. PRECAUTIONS: Approaching the dam, immediately moor your ship to shore. IF YOU DO NOT managed to do and currents fascinated YOU TO Dam:
  • Try to send the boat away from the edge of the dam;
  • Make sure your boat is not overturned and fell into a whirlpool.

If this happens.

  • immediately jump into the water;
  • dive as deep as possible to be below the water vortex;
  • swim under the water away from the whirlpool until you feel that he left behind;
  • then get to the surface and immediately sent toward the shore.
