Queensland Government's ways of managing jet ski activities

Under the 2006 plan by Queensland State Government, recreational jet skiers will be required to obtained a special jet ski licence to be allowed to operate their pwc, and be prohibited from jet skiing activities in "exclusion zones". The governmental plan provides for the minimum distance to be observed between jet skis and people and vessels in the water, as well as the minimal distance to the shore in order to comply with noise and safety standards. According to a government spokesman, since 2001 jet skis have been responsible for 7.6% of all reported recreational and sea watersports related incidents, while 10% of accidents resulted in serious injuries, including fatal recreational boating incidents. Australia's experience shows that the responsible use of jet skis can be pursued without adversely affecting the community, and that the overwhelming majority of recreational jet skiers and personal watercraft owners are responsible people.
